On a 7 am morning check on our doe Sandy that had the hard delivery just days before, I chanced to peek in on Dorrit, as she was due to deliver that day. Dorrit true to schedule was streaming fluids just as she should.
So I went on with my task of tending Sandy's kids, making sure they had eaten, and getting Sandy her shot. Made a quick trip to the house, packed up my lunch and supplies for work, grabbed an armload of towels and headed back to the barn to wait.
Dorrit, did everything she should, paced and stretched and pushed a little, then paced some more. She is very anxious to be a mother and would lie down ever so gently, push twice then get up and look around for her kid. As if to say " I did some work, now where is my Baby!" After a few go-arounds of this behavior, she presented two little hooves, I gave them a gentle tug and she delivered us a beautiful Black doe kid with white splashed sides. Grateful to have the doe kid we hoped for, I Checked my clock, It's 8:20 Dorrit, Hurry up! I have to get to work in 30 minutes!
More pacing, pushing, checking, pacing and a second Kid arrived at 8:45. Cutting it close Dorrit! What is this kid? Another Doe! Black with silver moon spots.
I bounced her belly, there is a third one! Off to the house I went, Joe It's your turn to midwife. SO off to work I went, waiting by the phone to hear what that third kid was. At 10:30 I finally got the call. A third Doe kid. This one Black with a lot of white paint, or is she white with black paint?
Dorrit was done, with three little girls. BUT WAIT! That's not all Joe had to tell me. Molly, our mixed Doe, also had a Buck kid while he was milking. A big red boy. Now, I had checked that darn doe while I was tending Dorrit. Not a sign other than a full Udder. She wasted no time going into labor and giving us a big Boer cross Buck kid.
BUT that's not all....Joe told me he thought Gypsy might go into labor also, and sure enough, at 2 o'clock that afternoon, I got another phone call: She didn't wait for you. She had two girls. 2 more girls! 5 does total born this last day of the year. And all 5 does are Six M Galaxy Solomon Granddaughters. What a way to end the year!
